I got my start in software development with WordPress sites and moved on to Android development for a few years. Android is an embodiment of hell. You’re locked into a proprietary ecosystem that demands your identity and frequently changes the rules of engagement, threatening your project’s viability and potentially wasting effort.
WordPress development is more of the same; a platform which dictates what’s acceptable and can kick the chair out from under you for any or no reason.
Developing a full-stack webapp has been incredibly freeing. I get to decide what features are included, how its distributed, and I design and refine the experience. There’s no ecosystem or capitalist motives to please, and I don’t have to subject those who choose my software to ads, tracking, or other stupidity.
I just want to write software that makes people happy! I don’t want to worry about an algorithm taking 95% of the users away because I refused to run ads or delisting and uninstalling my app on phones after I refuse ID verification.
In other words: I just wanna write software, man! I don’t wanna squeeze people for money!
We’re heading towards the digital embodiment of hell; a fully identified, fully controlled pipeline of creation, distribution, and consumption under the guise of safety.
